An exercise in empathy. Allow me to take a moment and share the sounds, smells, and actions I observed:
Squeeking breaks on Congress
Rumbling bus engines
Cigarette/sweat/urine/food hanging in the air
Stroller wheels roll, yoga mats for a stretch
"Aw, man!"
The scene downtown changes drastically from day into night. That city is alive. Buildings buzz with bass so loud you feel it in your bones. Street vendors sell tacos, roses, and maybe a pupusa if you're lucky. Sounds at night shift to vehicles idling or cruising West. Buses have stopped running for the day, and the seating area stays empty thanks to a guard making his rounds.
I observed building materials consisting of terracotta tiles/masonry bricks/concrete/coated metal/ceramic tiles. The patterns on the tiles are extremely detailed meaning labor -meaning energy, water, heat and time were all expended on this material. Due to the majority of the floor level being cement or bricks, the landscaping is limited to a handful of trees.
It may not surprise you that the Ronstadt Transit Center could be renovated and maintain the connection to the local businesses and nearby buildings.
